Randy Pausch died today.
At 47, Pausch lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. He leaves behind his wife and three children (all under the age of 6). And for those of you who don’t know Pausch, he is the renowned computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University who became famous for his inspirational “Last Lecture”(September 2007). He found out in August 2007 the cancer that he had been battling since 2006 would kill him in six months(though he ended up living nine months after the diagnosis).
A few strong points I took away from Pausch –
His motto : “If something goes wrong, do not complain-work harder”
If Pausch only had three words of advice : Tell the truth. And if he got three more words, all the time.
Be good at something : it make you valuable
Find the best in everybody. You might have to wait a long time(sometimes years), but people will show you their good side. Just keep waiting. No one is all evil.
Taught his students to have fearless. It’s better to fail fantastically than do something mediocre.
Anger doesn’t make a situation better.
Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you want.
Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you. If you’re angry at someone, you just haven’t given them enough time.
I don’t know how not to have fun. I am dying and I am having fun. And I’m going to keep having fun, everyday I have left.
It is fun to do the impossible.
How to get people to help you? You can’t get there alone, and I believe in Karma. Tell the Truth. Be earnest. Apologize when you screw up. Focus on others, not yourself.
Loyalty is a two-way street.
Show gratitude.
When you do the right thing, good stuff has a way of happening.
It is not about achieving your dreams, it’s about leading your life. If you lead your life in the right way, Karma will take care of itself. The dreams will come to you.
Randy Pausch, God bless, rest in peace and thank you.
